what these are

These stories started because the world kept offering two options: merge, or disappear.

The novellas are the third option, written into existence. In September 2013, something cracked open, and the journeys that followed — first as private field notes, then as books — became one long study of what the author would only later have names for: what it is to be treated as an extension of someone else, what it is to not be seen at all, and what becomes possible when two whole people actually meet.

Each book is a first-person journey through the principle in its title. Written between 2016 and 2019 and sold in person at farmers markets and music festivals, where the author would tell people: be a full-length mirror, not a compact. A full-length mirror shows the whole other person. A compact is small, and it's for looking at yourself. The readers always knew exactly what that meant. They still do.

Years later, the study got its research names — recognition, merger, non-engagement — and its buildings: the arcs, a talk, an API. The fiction didn't predict the work. It was the work, before the work knew its name. The research lives at deiadora.com; this is where it was first felt.
